Tomas Casas is pleased to announce that he will officially return to the Canadian Superbike Championship in 2022 with renewed support from Yamaha Canada, Parts Canada, and ITK9, as he prepares for his seventh season in the Pro ranks and second full campaign aboard a feature Superbike.
Casas will again be riding a 2019-spec Yamaha YZF-R1 machine as part of his partnership with Yamaha Canada, and will also welcome back GBRacing and their FIM-approved engine covers as part of his racing campaign.
“I look forward to continuing to gain more experience and being more competitive onboard the Superbike machine this year,” Tomas said. “I am also really grateful for the continued support of all my sponsors for making this possible as we head into 2022.”
The team is also pleased to welcome the addition of Payam Shafinia for 2022, a familiar face in the CSBK paddock after a successful tenure helping former factory rider and two-time race winner Alex Welsh, amongst others.
The 2015 Pro Rookie of the Year and two-time Pro Sport Bike champion expects to once again be one of the frontrunners in the national championship, after a tough season last year finishing seventh in the overall standings and fourth in 2019.
His return is also vital to Yamaha’s chances in the Constructors Championship, after contributing 144 of the manufacturers 226 points last season, helping them to fourth in the inaugural season of the trophy battle.
Casas is currently recovering from an injury suffered in a training incident mid-April, resulting in damage to his right scaphoid, though he does not expect to miss any time to begin the season and is hoping for a full recovery by the middle of the campaign.
“It’s unfortunate to be starting the season recovering from injury, but I am hopeful in being able to salvage as many points as possible early on as I get back to full strength,” Tomas added.
Despite the injury leaving him at less than 100%, the team is hoping the return to a full schedule can benefit Casas, after the COVID-19 pandemic limited the series to just three rounds in Ontario last season. His lone Pro Superbike podium in 2019 was famously scored at Atlantic Motorsport Park in Nova Scotia, where CSBK will be returning this season after two years away.
Casas would again like to thank title sponsors Yamaha Motor Canada, Parts Canada, and ITK9 for their continued support ahead of the 2022 season, while also recognizing the backing from GBRacing, Motul, Pro6 Cycle and Dunlop Tires, Hindle Exhaust, Bickle Racing, Flexiglass, DP Brakes, Brooklin Cycle Racing, Vortex, Human 2.0, Forsaken Motorsports, Peterborough Cycle Salvage, Trackdayhub, Laps4MD, and everyone else who continues to support the team’s journey.
