Tomas Casas will be running an abbreviated program for the 2024 Bridgestone Canadian Superbike Championship season, confirming plans to attend only the final two Ontario rounds this summer.
The two-time Pro Sport Bike champion and regular Superbike frontrunner enjoyed an excellent start to the 2023 season, sitting fourth in the feature class championship before an injury cut short his final round at SMP, finishing seventh in the final order.
Unfortunately, personal circumstances and the financial burden involved in motorcycle racing has made it challenging for Casas and the team to continue that momentum into 2024, making the difficult decision to prioritize a two-round comeback to end the year with the goal of a full return in 2025.
His planned appearances at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and Shannonville Motorsport Park will continue with Yamaha, as Casas maintains his strong relationship with the brand aboard his YZF-R1 thanks to their continued support.
Despite the unfortunate setback, Casas and the team are hopeful it will be a decision that allows them to return to the front of the field on a regular basis in 2025.
“It was definitely not easy. The closer it gets to round one, the harder it is to know I won’t be racing, but it was the tough decision we had to make,” Tomas said. “Yamaha and my continuing sponsors have been a huge support through the whole process, and hopefully we can get back on the R1 for the full season in 2025.”
An expanded schedule in 2024 has made budgeting for the series especially difficult, with six rounds and 12 feature class races set for this summer after only five scheduled rounds a year ago.
In his personal life, Casas has just completed his fourth year as a Kinesiology student atv York University and is going into his second year of Athletic Therapy, complicating his race efforts as he positions himself for his future both on and off-track beginning in 2025.
When Casas does return to the CSBK championship to close out 2024, it will be with a new title sponsor and other various new supporters, with the team seeking sponsorship for the 2025 campaign.
In the meantime, Tomas will continue riding with both the FAST Riding School and Super Sonic Road Race School, where he works as a teacher and instructor for new riders of all ages and levels. This will be just one part of his training process to ensure he is ready to return to the series at full-strength in 2025.
