The GP Bikes Pro Superbike grid will be absent one of its top names to conclude the season, as Tomas Casas has been ruled out of the final round at Shannonville Motorsport Park after his qualifying crash on Friday.
Chasing a spot on the front row (and ultimately qualifying fourth), Casas went down in the entry of turn four with under two minutes remaining and was unable to remount. The Parts Canada Yamaha rider returned to his pit area under his own power, but was brought to Quinte Health Belleville General Hospital due to concern with his right hand and wrist.
The pace at the front of the Bridgestone Canadian Superbike Championship ramped up dramatically on Saturday, as Alex Dumas crushed FP2 to kick off a crucial day in the feature GP Bikes Pro Superbike class at Shannonville Motorsport Park.
After crashing out of race one and Friday and watching his championship hopes take a massive blow in the process, Dumas responded in exactly the way he needed to on Saturday morning, going 0.729 seconds quicker than rival and new title leader Ben Young.
Dumas led for majority of the session but with varying times, trimming nearly a full-second off his pace in the second half as the rest of the field worked hard to match the Purple Skull Brewing/Liqui Moly Suzuki rider.
Mavrick Cyr crossed off his entire weekend to-do list on Saturday, officially becoming the first national champion of the season in the penultimate day of amateur classes at Shannonville Motorsport Park on Friday.
Looking to clinch the Scorpion EXO Amateur Sport Bike championship, Cyr initially had his hopes denied for at least another day as rival Andrew Cooney won on-track, closing the title up exponentially as Cyr slumped to fifth.
However, post-race tech inspection later revealed that Cooney was over the horsepower limit aboard his new Economy Lube and Tire Ducati, receiving an eight-place penalty and relegating him back to ninth in the final order.
For the first time in a half-decade, the Canada Cup is staying with its owner.
Ben Young officially retained his #1 plate on Saturday, winning race two at Shannonville Motorsport Park to clinch the GP Bikes Pro Superbike class in the final round of the Bridgestone Canadian Superbike Championship.
It originally looked as though the title fight would at least proceed onto Sunday, as Alex Dumas grabbed the holeshot and led virtually from start-to-finish with Young settling into a comfortable second, needing to gain four points on Dumas in order to clinch.
His pace began to ramp up dramatically in the final few laps, however, and the gap continued to drop as Young reeled in Dumas, pressuring him but still not showing any indication he would take the risk of passing his rival.
