There was a massive shift atop the Amateur ranks at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on Saturday, as Andrew Cooney seized the lead of the AIM Insurance Amateur Superbike class at round four of the Bridgestone Canadian Superbike Championship.
Facing a 12-point title deficit to rival Mavrick Cyr – who had thus far been unbeaten in both amateur classes – Cooney found himself locked in a six-rider battle at the front early on, one that included Cyr right on his tail as Matt Vanderhorst paced the field.
A determined Cooney eventually ran out of patience at his favourite venue, though, working his way into the lead and stretching out a slight advantage aboard his Fast Company Honda.
The gap atop the Bridgestone Canadian Superbike Championship shrunk considerably on Saturday, as Ben Young blitzed the GP Bikes Pro Superbike class in race one at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
The pole-sitter was briefly displaced by rival and championship leader Alex Dumas off the line but needed just one turn to get him back, passing Dumas into turn two and leading the rest of the way in the 20-lap feature.
As Young continued to stretch his early lead, the battle behind him began to take shape as Dumas was quickly hunted down by Sam Guerin and Tomas Casas, igniting a three-rider clash that would continue right to the finish.
Race one winner Ben Young continued his unbeaten weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on Sunday, topping FP3 at round four of the Bridgestone Canadian Superbike Championship.
Young has enjoyed a comfortable advantage all weekend, cruising to a six-second victory on Saturday aboard his Van Dolder’s Home Team BMW, but that lead shrunk dramatically entering races two and three as Sam Guerin pressured him throughout the morning session.
Both riders sat well clear of the rest of the pack for majority of the 15-minute warmup, as Young topped the timesheets with a best lap of 1:21.768, only 0.150 seconds faster than the EFC Group BMW of Guerin.
The battle for the 2023 Bridgestone Canadian Superbike Championship continued to heat up on Sunday, as Ben Young won race two in the GP Bikes Pro Superbike feature class at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
Similar to race one on Saturday, Young saw championship leader Alex Dumas grab the holeshot off the line, but again needed just a handful of corners to seize the lead from his main rival.
Unlike race one, however, Young failed to break away from the chasing pack, as Sam Guerin moved past Dumas and quickly latched onto the reigning champion with the lead trio separating from an eight-rider group.
