After a not so ideal start to Trevor’s 2015 Mopar CSBK Canadian Superbike race season, Round 2 at Autodrome St-Eustache was a weekend full of new things.
The first “new thing” was the addition of Dave Weaver to Trevor’s race program. Dave is former crew chief to renown SBK rider Larry Pegram and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team. Being proficient with finite tuning details, overall bike setup, data analytical skills and his long history of working with Ohlins suspension guru Jon Cornwell throughout his AMA and World Superbike crew chief career, brings a much welcome injection of experience into working with Trevor and the Parts Canada/Suzuki Canada/ Yoshimura USA GSX-R1000 race bikes.
Trevor was quick out of the gates, gelling immediately with Dave to put the Parts Canada/Suzuki GSX-R1000’s with their new paint scheme’s (new thing two”) into P3 by the end of Friday’s testing sessions.
Saturday started very positive as Trevor was very consistent in morning practice on old and on fresh Dunlop tires as the team dialled in the bike in preparation for the afternoon’s qualifying session. “I felt great on the bike and the hot weather conditions didn’t bother me at all as I was very comfortable in my Alpinestars leathers and HJC helmet.” Admitting Trevor says, “I struggled a little getting focused in the afternoon “superpole” qualifying session. I was pushing hard but wasn’t able to connect sectors to put in a lap I was happy with. I was still feeling some discomfort with my hands, being only 3 weeks out from a crash in pre-season testing but wasn’t concerned as the weather and track conditions for Sunday were going to be much different”.
Sunday brought cold weather and plenty of rain. Trevor settled into 6th spot in the first few laps of the race trying to get a feel for the pace and track in the ever changing rain conditions. After the red flag and subsequent re-start, Trevor was able to maneuver by 2014 Superbike Champion Jodi Christie and local favourite, Sebastian Tremblay into 3rd.
The changes Dave had made for the conditions to the Parts Canada/Suzuki, along with the tire pressure advice from Sandy Noce of Pro6Cycle/Dunlop tires were showing they were the right ones as Trevor was right on pace with race leader Mike Leon and Jordan Szoke.
Unfortunately shortly after getting into third place, entering turn one, Trevor ran through some standing water in the brake zone and very quickly was unfortunately sliding. He was able to re-mount and finish the race with a 9th place and some ever important championship points.
Along with the setup changes and advancements to the Parts Canada/Suzuki GSX-R1000 made by Dave Weaver during the race 2 event, Trevor is very excited to have had the opportunity to stop by Brooklin Cycle Racing this week.
Rob Egan, Brooklin Cycle and CSBK tech and tuning expert, made time from his extremely busy schedule to dyno tune and map Trevor’s race bike. Rob’s tuning expertise along with the addition of a Yoshimura Research and development USA exhaust system made for some substantial gains not only to the peak power but importantly throughout the entire power range of the bike.
Trevor is focused on the positives from the weekend and looking forward to round 3 of the Mopar CSBK Canadian Superbike championship next weekend at the Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta.
