Four of the top riders from the 2019 Mopar CSBK National Championships were on hand at the Toronto Mini-Indy indoor Go-Kart venue on Sunday morning, January 26. Their purpose was to test the Ohvale range of small-sized road racers, provided by Eurorace and Champion Cycle.
Leading the charge was 2019 Mopar CSBK National Champion, Collingwood’s Ben Young, the BMW works team leader. Yamaha Canada’s fourth overall rider Tomas Casas, a veteran of every class in the National tour starting with the Honda CBR125R Challenge, came to ride from Peterborough, ON.
Ravenna, ON’s Kenny Riedmann, victor in the final event of 2019 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for Kawasaki was on hand, along with Suzuki’s Trevor Daley of Mississauga, who netted fifth in the final points standings for the 2019 Mopar CSBK Championships.
Although Jordan Szoke was busy earning honours at the International Challenge at Phillip Island in Australia aboard a 1983 Mojo Yamaha CMR FJ four-cylinder, his family was on hand to ride the provided Ohvale single-cylinder machinery: veteran racer and stunt woman Amy, and son Wolf.
“This is a great opportunity to try out some of these impressive Italian race bikes, and also get together for some two-wheeled competition in the middle of our winter,” explained Young. “I raced pocket bikes when I was younger and was pretty comfortable with the Ohvale right off the bat.
“It will be good to see what is possible as the development of these machines in Canada progresses – both inside during the winter and outside when it gets warmer. I think this could be really good for the development of younger Canadian racers.”
The CSBK aces tested in pairs, leading to lots of entertaining dices. While there were a few minor tip-overs, no injuries occurred, and the Ohvale racers seemed to tumble well without any complications.
The biggest drama of the day proved popular with the spectators on-hand, as Young attempted a dive-bomb pass on Riedmann entering the 180-degree hairpin at the end of the longest straight, and the ambitious move didn’t work out. Young went up, then down, without injury, clipping leader Riedmann as he leaned into the corner.
Mopar CSBK plans to display one of the Ohvale racers in their booth at the upcoming Toronto Motorcycle Show at the Enercare Centre on the CNE Grounds, on the lakeshore in downtown Toronto, February 21-23.
