Round 4 Report: Ben Young

Racers and teams headed out east for the double-header Round 4 of the MOPAR Canadian Superbike Championship (CSBK) at Atlantic Motorsport Park, Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia. The weekend provided a mix bag of weather and results for Ben Young, as he pushed hard for his first win, though it escaped him once again. Aboard his #86 Scot-Build/Barrie Trim and Mouldings BMW S1000RR, Young brought home a 2nd and a 3rd, results which did not reflect the effort the team put into the weekend. 

With two races over the weekend, there was a practice and qualifying session on the dry and warm Friday afternoon. During free practice, Young was just 0.023 seconds in front of Jordan Szoke in second position. The qualifying session started with all competitors, then the top ten from that session moved through to the Dalton Timmis Insurance SuperPole.  During the thrilling SuperPole qualifying session, Young was the first to break into the 1:07 lap times on his Scot-Build/Barrie Trim and Mouldings BMW S1000RR. This gave Young provisional pole with 7 minutes to go, before Szoke pipped Young’s time by 0.236 seconds to take Pole Position. With the 7 minutes remaining in the session, Young decided to sit tight in second position as he knew he had the race pace for the two gruelling 22 lap races over the two-day event.  

The threat of rain on Saturday delayed the race, though the benefit was a dry race for the superbikes. Off the line into the first corner, Young tried to prevent Szoke getting by, though the result was Szoke and Young running wide, letting Samuel Trepanier into 2nd, with Young close behind. The first few laps of the race was thrilling, wheel-to-wheel racing, until Szoke started to pull a lead, leaving Young and Trepanier to their battle. With two laps to go, Young made his move going into the carousel to take 2nd– the position in which he would finish the race.  

Again, the rain came heavy in the morning on Sunday, but it cleared up in time for race two.  Launching off the line, Young exited turn one in second position, right behind Szoke. The race pace was quick, with the top racers doing consistent low/mid 1:08’s. Young kept onto Szoke, applying some pressure, but made a huge mistake almost taking himself out of the race at the end of lap one. He regrouped, but lost drive the turn before the Carousel, which Trepanier took advantage off, bumping Young into 3rd position. A lapper caused a cushion between Young and Trepanier with a few laps to go, but Young didn’t give up, continually pushing and putting in quick laps. Ben said “I chased Sam all the way to the end with just a bike length between us going across the line – if I’d had another lap, I would have taken second”. With his first 3rd position of the season, Young lost his streak of consistent 2nd place finishes, but still came away from the weekend with valuable points. 

As we move into the final race meeting of the year next month, Young had the following to say: “We are looking forward to more improvements into the season finale at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, and to finish the year off strong, giving us lots of momentum going into 2019.”
